Roundabout Safety: A Wisconsin Auto Insurance Policy May Be your Best Bet

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is constructing more roundabouts throughout the state in an effort to reduce intersection-related crashes as well as intersection congestion.  It may take awhile for drivers to get used to using roundabouts, so it is a good idea to make sure your Wisconsin auto insurance policy is protecting you adequately before driving in a roundabout.

While roundabouts are being developed to reduce auto accidents, there are still accidents that occur as drivers get used to using roundabouts.  The most common accident types in roundabouts include rear-end collisions, sideswipes and accidents related to entering and circulating the roundabout.

With all these chances for accidents to occur, a good Wisconsin auto insurance plan is a necessity.  However, roundabouts have been shown to reduce auto accidents once drivers get used to them and if they are used correctly.  Here are some tips from the Wisconsin DOT that can help you safely and successfully use a roundabout:

  • Slow down when approaching the roundabout and obey traffic signs.  Always yield to pedestrians, bicycles and emergency vehicles.
  • Always yield to traffic to your left that is already in the roundabout.  Safely merge into the roundabout, choosing the proper lane if it is a two-lane roundabout.  Look for road signs and white arrows on the road to determine which lane you should use.
  • Use your right turn signal when exiting the roundabout, watching for and yielding to pedestrians and bicycles.
  • Try to avoid driving next to or passing large vehicles, such as trucks, in the roundabout.  Large vehicles may need more room and are allowed to cross into other lanes in the roundabout.  There is also a “truck apron,” which is for the rear wheels of a truck to use in the roundabout.  Only large vehicles may use the truck apron.
  • Always make sure your Wisconsin auto insurance plan is up to date and protecting you as best as it can.

Reviewing safe and smart driving techniques will help drivers successfully use roundabouts.  Contact us today if you have any questions regarding your Wisconsin auto insurance policy or if you would like to set up a plan with us!
