According to the Stevens Point Journal, the Dozynki Harvest Fest drew hundreds of people, both young and old. The event was held on Saturday in the downtown area, with Art in the Park at Pfiffner Pioneer Park and the farmers market between the harvest and art festivals.
The events also highlighted the remodeled Mathias Mitchell Public Square. Its new layout allowed for a polka tent to become the focal point at one end of the festival. In addition, the square was renovated to draw people to downtown for events such as those held Saturday.
“I think (the square) will be a great drawing point for Stevens Point,” said Gayle Phillip, president of the Polish Heritage Awareness Society. However, the logistics of Saturday’s festivities caused a few issues. Due to the polka tent’s size, there was little room for much else in the square.
Vendors and booths were spread out along Main Street and the farmers market was pushed to a parking lot at the corner of Water Street and Crosby Avenue. The market typically occupies the center square, and Saturdays are the biggest selling days.
“I was kind of disappointed that the farmers market wasn’t (on the square),” said Andi Opperman, co-owner of The Companion Shop. “But if there isn’t room, there isn’t room.” Although there were some problems, the community came together for a great event, filled with wonderful music, food, and fun!
