According to the Journal Sentinel, over the last few months, Ken, a video producer, and his wife, Karen Gill, a personal chef, both 41, sold just about everything the own. This may sound crazy to some, but the reason they did it was to pursue their goal: to take a trip together and travel around the world.
Since the wedding, Ken and Karen had agreed they were not going to have children, and instead, in 10 years, they were going to take this trip together. However, it turned out, they couldn’t wait quite that long. So, Ken flew to Minneapolis early Friday with Karen to follow on Saturday. Monday morning they would be off to Tokyo, then Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India, Nepal, etc.
“We’re hitting the reset button on our lives,” Karen said. “We don’t want to come back to the same stuff.” Ken grew up loving airports. “Every time I’m in an airport, I’m excited,” he said. “To me, that plane is the gateway to the entire world.” In college, Karen spent a summer in Utah, the first time she’d ever seen the West. “I was transformed,” she said.
During their 15 months traveling the world, they plan to volunteer. They’d like to teach English to novice Buddhist monks in Thailand, help in some capacity in Nepal, and work to protect sea turtle eggs from humans and other predators. “We can be light on our feet and take opportunities when they come,” Ken said. “It’s not like we have to be back on a certain day.”
